The 2025 EurILCA Master BEL concluded today in Ostend, Belgium, after three days of competition.
The regatta was defined by strong winds and demanding sea conditions, challenging both competitors and organisers. Despite the weather, the Royal North Sea Yacht Club, in partnership with the Ostend Sailing Club, ran a well-executed and successful event.
Saturday
Racing began in Force 5 conditions, gusting to Force 6, with a confused sea making for a demanding first race. A dramatic 40-degree wind shift on the opening beat led to an offset course, creating tactical passing opportunities—especially for those who reacted quickly after the port-hand gate mark. Spectacular off-wind sailing followed, but with the wind continuing to build, the Race Committee sensibly postponed further racing for the day after Race 1.
Sunday
Gale-force winds arrived as forecast, and the fleet welcomed the early decision to abandon racing on safety grounds.
Monday
Conditions mirrored those of Saturday—Force 5 with stronger gusts—but without the extreme shifts. Racing went ahead as scheduled, producing close and competitive sailing despite the continued challenges at sea.
While the weather was far from ideal, the championship showcased resilience, tactical skill, and strong race management. The Royal North Sea Yacht Club and Ostend Sailing Club are to be congratulated for delivering a memorable and professionally run event.
