Charlotte Rose USA is the new ILCA 6 Women’s World Champion — breaking a 20-year European hold on the title, the first non-European winner since Lijia Xu CHN in 2006. Yet every other sailor in the top ten was European, including both other medalists. Emma Plasschaert BEL took Silver after a 6-2 in the Final Series, and Anna Munch DEN completed the podium with Bronze, scoring 5-4 — two of the three medals going to Europe, just as they did at last week’s Men’s Worlds.
Emma Plasschaert BEL reflected on a bittersweet but historic Silver — her first medal color yet to add to a career full of them:
“I think it’s a bit double, to be honest. I’m obviously very happy to come away with a Silver medal — it’s one I haven’t had yet, so that’s exciting, I can collect the full set now. But there was obviously an opportunity today, and it was tricky racing — sometimes it falls one way, sometimes another. I think I did well to get back into it in the second Final Series race, and Silver it is, so I’m pretty happy.”
Anna Munch DEN was still processing her first-ever Worlds medal:
“It still hasn’t really sunk in — I’m just so, so happy. It’s my first medal at a Worlds, and it means so much. I can’t even describe it, it’s just an amazing feeling. Charlotte was really dominant this week, and I definitely think we found the right World Champion at this event. I’m so happy for her, she did an amazing job.”
The rest of the top ten was entirely European: Maria Erdi HUN (4th), Matilda Nicholls GBR (5th), Maxime Jonker NED (6th), Eve McMahon IRL (7th), Hannah Snellgrove GBR (8th), Louise Cervera FRA (9th) and Agata Barwińska POL (10th).
