2026 ILCA Under-21 Europeans Race day 5

Strong breeze helps the 2026 ILCA U21 Europeans catch up in Bodrum

A steady breeze of 12 to 16 knots allowed racing to catch up on day 5 of the 2026 ILCA Under-21 European Championships & Open European Trophy in Bodrum. The women and the men’s Gold fleet completed three races, while the men’s Silver fleet sailed two, on the first day of the men’s final series.

Racing was planned to start at 13:15, but two general recalls for the women’s fleet, the second under the black flag, delayed the action.

The wind was from the northwest at around 14 knots. At 13:45 the women’s fleet finally got away, followed by the men, and the breeze stayed steady between 14 and 16 knots during the first set of races.

The second set of races began with great wind still averaging 15 knots, but two more unsuccessful start attempts for the women’s fleet led to a delay of almost one hour on the water for all fleets. The women’s second race finally started at 15:30 in around 12 knots, picking up to 16 at the first mark. For the third set of races, the wind stayed consistent at 12 to 14 knots.

Sailors started returning to shore at around 17:30, where the club had prepared a döner kebab party and a lottery for them.

In the provisional results, Ginevra Caracciolo ITA leads the ILCA 6 with 18 points, ahead of her compatriot Maria Vittoria Arseni ITA on 27 points and Linda Dokoupilova CZE on 37. In the ILCA 7, Karol Krupski Teterycz ESP takes the lead with 32 points, followed by Antonio Pascali ITA on 42 points and Fernando Abella Garrido ESP on 44. In the ILCA 7 Under-19 ranking, Alessandro Cirinei ITA and Kutsal Güneş Kurnaz TUR are tied on 57 points, with Sergio García ESP third on 66.

Caracciolo feels the weight of the last day. “I feel a bit of pressure because tomorrow we have three more races, so I’m sure it’s going to be a great battle with my teammate and also with the other girls,” she said. “Today was a solid day. Tomorrow I just want to race, stay relaxed, enjoy this last day and hope for some good wind as today.”

Dokoupilova enjoyed the conditions. “We finally got some wind, so it was a lot of hiking, but I really enjoyed it and I’m excited for tomorrow,” she said. “The strategy won’t really change. I will try to do my best like in every race and just stay focused.”

Pascali was also pleased with his day. “The beginning wasn’t great, but I knew it was still going to be long, with lots of racing and lots of points,” he said. “I don’t know what position I’m in now, but today was a pretty good day and I’m quite happy. When it’s windy on the reaching legs, it’s super fun for me. It’s one of the main reasons I go sailing. For tomorrow, of course we go full attack and we see what comes.”

The championship is scheduled to conclude tomorrow with a final day of three planned races, with the first possible warning signal at 13:00 (12:00 CEST).
