As part of the EurILCA Sustainability Initiative and Clean Regattas framework, several sustainability measures and environmental activities were implemented during the 2026 ILCA Senior European Championships in Marina Kaštela.
Water refill stations were prepared throughout the venue, encouraging participants to refill their own reusable bottles and reduce single-use plastic consumption.
Food service during the championship also followed sustainable practices. Meals were served in paper bowls with wooden cutlery, while sandwiches for race management and support boats were distributed in paper bags instead of plastic packaging.
Waste sorting stations were placed across the venue, allowing separate disposal of plastic, paper and general waste.
Participants additionally received a sustainability booklet within their welcome packages containing environmental guidelines, information about sustainable initiatives during the championship, as well as recommendations for alternative transportation options and local mobility.
Before the start of the championship, an underwater cleanup of the area surrounding Sailing Club Marina Kaštela was organised in order to prepare and protect the operational regatta zone used by competitors.
In addition, on Tuesday, 19 May, a beach cleanup activity was organised by Sailing Club Marina Kaštela in cooperation with students from class 7c of Elementary School Knez Trpimir, the environmental association “Lijepa Naša Kaštela”, and Rowing Club Marina Kaštela. The participants collected mainly plastic waste and larger debris from the beach area.
After the cleanup, despite the very hot and sunny conditions, the children continued the day with informal discussions about marine ecology and environmental protection while sharing pizza and refreshments.
The implementation of these activities was supported by Marina Kaštela through logistical and operational assistance, including support materials for the cleanup activities.
The Organising Authority hopes that these activities will not only contribute to a more sustainable championship, but also encourage future cooperation and long-term environmental initiatives within the local community surrounding Marina Kaštela.
