2017 Senior Europeans – Thrilling last races to crown our champions

A beautiful sunny day and stable 14 knots wind in the afternoon allowed sailors to enjoy the last two exciting races at the 2017 Laser Senior European Championships in Barcelona.

After a thrilling end of competition and changes on scores we could finally get our new 2017 Laser Senior European champions; Nick Thompson GBR (Laser Standard), Marit Bouwmeester NED (Laser Radial Women), Marcin Rudawski POL (Laser Radial Men) and Marcelo Cairo ESP (Laser Radial Men Under 21). Congratulations!

2017 Laser Senior Europeans – Final results

Laser Standard results

Nick Thompson GBR won only 1 race in this event, the last one, but that meant a new Laser Senior European Championship for him. He was sixth overall this morning, 10 points behind leader. He knew he had to do it well and wait for all 5 sailors in front of him to fail. And happened. With a 7-1 score today he closed championship with 53 points.

Overnight leader Francesco Marrai ITA (35-13) couldn’t manage to valid leadership today and fell to 2nd with 61. Tonci Stipanovic CRO (37-9) doubled his points today and dropped from 2nd to 9th overall with 96. Pavlos Kontides CYP (5-17) kept 4th place overall and 3rd european with 66.

Giovanni Coccoluto ITA (14-21) dropped from 3rd to 5th overall with 69 units, and Philipp Buhl GER (21-8) was finally 6th overall with 78.

Andrew McKenzie NZL (10-5) was 3rd overall with 62 units.

Laser Radial Women – Final results

Marit Bouwmeester NED (10-17) was really close to loose the championship today, although having a 15 points distance before races. Finally she closed event with 53 points, only 1 point in front of 2nd Anne-Marie Rindom DEN (1-16) with 54, and 4 points ahead of 3rd Basileia Carahaliou GRE with 57.

Svenja Weger GER (7-11) was fourth with 63 and Tuula Tenkanen FIN (3-7) was fifth with 64 units.

Laser Radial Men – Final results

Marcin Rudawski POL (1-1) concluded championship in great shape today winning both races and ending first overall with 37 points. Marcelo Cairo ESP (9-8) was 2nd overall and new 2017 Laser Radial Under 21 champion with 52. Third place overall and second U21 for Dimitris Papadimitriou GRE (2-27) with 59. Antonio Coronilla ESP (16-3) was fourth overall with 63.
