Race day 2 report – 2024 ILCA Under 21 Europeans

21459 2

The second day of racing at the 2024 ILCA Under 21 European Championships & Open European Trophy drew to a close today. The event is hosted by Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença in Majorca, Spain.

This year’s event has attracted 202 sailors, with 137 competing in ILCA 7 and 65 in ILCA 6, representing 36 nations, including 28 from Europe.

Similar to yesterday, the day began with a one-hour postponement on shore due to a lack of wind. Eventually, the first warning signal was given around 13:00 for the initial group in the sequence, the ILCA 6. Following a general recall, the ILCA 7 yellow fleet also commenced with a clear start. Both fleets managed to complete their races promptly. Unfortunately, the ILCA 7 blue fleet race had to be abandoned due to unstable conditions.

As the wind diminished and became increasingly unpredictable, the Race Committee made efforts to relocate the race course twice around the bay, in pursuit of the wind wherever it emerged. Despite several start attempts, the light and shifting breeze from different directions led to the decision to raise AP over Alpha for the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 yellow fleet, signaling their return to shore after completing one race. Meanwhile, the ILCA 7 blue fleet remained on the water, managing to complete one race before heading back to the club around 18:15.

Following three races for all three fleets, the provisional leaders are as follows.

ILCA 6 Championship

Reigning ILCA 6 Women’s Under 21 World champion Eve McMahon IRL continues to lead girl’s competition after winning the single race today. She heads the fleet with 8 points, escorted by Marga Perello ESP and Lilly May Niezabitowska POL with 15 and 16 points respectively. Emma Mattivi ITA is also close with 17.

The provisional podium has also seen a shuffle, with Bartosz Andrzejak POL occupying now the second position with 21 points. Third place overall for Enrico Tanferna ITA with 24.

In the Under 19 championship, Luka Zabukovec SLO has taken the lead, currently occupying the fourth position overall and tied with Yogev Alcalay ISR with 27 points.

Antonio Barabino ITA (10th overall) and Filip Olszewski POL (17th) complete the U19 provisional podium.
