The 2018 World Cup Series closed second step yesterday in Miami, USA, where most of our European sailors showed a remarkable performance.

With nine of 10 sailors starting the Medal Race mathematically alive for a medal, was finally British sailor Alison Young GRB who won the Gold medal with 71 points, finishing second on the last race. She was escorted on podium by Belgium sailor Emma Plasschaert BEL (80 pt – fourth on MR) and Danish Anne-Marie Rindom DEN (87 pt – sixth on MR).
But European sailor’s success on this event hadn’t finished there! Hungarian sailor Maria Erdi HUN closed championship in 4th overall, and rewarded herself winning a Medal Race for the first time in her wonderful and promising sailing career.
Yaaaay! First Medal Race win of my life! The win helped me to move up a few more places so I finished the Miami World Cup in 4th which I’m more than happy with after a difficult start of the regatta – Maria Erdi HUN.
Mathilde De Kerangat FRA, Josefin Olsson SWE, Daphne Van Der Vaart NED, Line Flem Host NOR and Nazli Cagla Donertas TUR were also part of the Top 10, finishing 6th to 10th respectively. Manami Doi JPN closed event on 5th and was the only non-european sailor among Top 10 competitors.

Men’s class was dominated instead by Rio 2016 Gold Olympic medalist Tom Burton AUS, arriving to Medal Race with 30 points advantage. With first place secured, eyes were focused in second and third places on podium, finally won by Philipp Buhl GER (also second on Medal) and Nick Thompson GBR (also third on MR) respectively.
Silver Medal in Miami! A 2nd place in a breezy medal race was a good way to finish the event! – Philipp Buhl GER.
Other European sailors among Top 10 were Elliot Hanson GBR (6th overall – seventh on Medal), Tonci Stipanovic CRO (9th overall – sixth on MR) and Hermann Tomasgaard NOR (10th overall – eighth on MR).
Chasing this man (Tom Burton) down all week… congrats Tom. I finished 6th overall after a tricky medal race. Excited to commit some more hours to my Olympic sailing this coming year as things heat up towards Tokyo 2020! – Elliot Hanson GBR.
Matthew Wearn AUS was the winner of the Medal Race and ranked 5th overall. Sam Meech NZL was 4th overall and fifth on MR.
