We are pleased to announce that Club Vela Calella is taking bold steps to ensure that this year’s EurILCA Master Series Regatta in Spain is not only a thrilling sports competition but also an environmentally responsible one. With a strong commitment to sustainability and in alignment with EurILCA’s Sustainability Programme requirements, the club is preparing a comprehensive Sustainability Plan aimed at reducing the event’s environmental impact while continuing to offer world-class racing and hospitality.
Sustainability at the Heart of the Event
In line with global environmental goals, Club Vela Calella is dedicated to making the EurILCA Master ESP a model of sustainable event management. While participants and spectators can expect a top-tier competition on the water, they will also witness meaningful efforts to minimize waste, reduce energy consumption, and raise awareness about environmental responsibility.
Key Elements of the Sustainability Plan:
- No Single-Use Bottles & Water Refill Stations: A water refill station will be available on-site, with signage encouraging attendees to refill their bottles.
- No Plastic Stickers: Instead of using advertising stickers, sponsor logos will be placed at the bottom of edited photos.
- No Plastic Straws: All beverages offered at the welcome party and official race dinner will be 100% plastic straw-free.
- Plastic-Free Dinnerware: Plastic containers and cups will be eliminated. Only ceramic tableware will be used for meals.
- Reusable Bags: All attendees will be provided with reusable bags.
- Eco-Friendly Prizes: Trophies will be made from wood and metal.
- Post-Event Educational and Reusable Signage: Both in the office and on the beach, signs will encourage waste reduction and recycling.
- Local Food: A significant percentage of the meals provided by Club Vela Calella will be sourced locally.
- Green Team: A dedicated green team will ensure compliance with the “Clean Regatta” campaign, collecting data and submitting it online for the final report. Beach and sea staff will be equipped with bags to separate organic and plastic waste on the beach and in the water. The green team will regularly check and remove waste from the beach and surrounding areas.
- Diverting Food Waste from Landfills: Any leftover food will be donated to local charities.
- Paperless Event Management: All race-related information will be available on the event website and social media channels. At the registration area, participants can check results and race details on a digital screen.
- Promote Alternative Transportation: Club Vela Calella will provide sailors with a list of nearby hotels and apartments, as well as information on bicycle rentals.
- Waste Management: To simplify waste disposal, all containers will be clearly marked with instructions on what can be disposed of where. Recycling bins will be placed around the race office, beaches, and nearby areas.
- Vegetarian and Vegan Options: The official regatta dinner will feature local, vegetarian, and vegan food options.
- Trolley Number Collection: The green team will collect trolley numbers for reuse in future editions of the event.
- Recycling: Any disposable materials will be recycled at designated recycling points.
- Preventing Toxins from Entering the Water: All sea and land staff will ensure that no waste is thrown into the water. They will be equipped with reusable materials and containers. Additionally, participants will be informed about and encouraged to use non-toxic sunscreens to promote the sustainability and health of our oceans.
- Spreading Awareness: Staff will ensure that sailors understand the efforts being made to achieve an ecological championship and why this initiative is so important.
A World-Class Competition, as Always
While the sustainability plan is a key focus, the EurILCA Master Series regatta at Club Vela Calella will remain a prestigious and highly competitive event. Sailors from around the globe will compete in one of the most stunning locations on the Mediterranean, offering an exciting and challenging race course for all participants. The club’s reputation for excellence in organizing events will continue, with top-tier facilities, great hospitality, and a community atmosphere for both competitors and spectators.
By combining a passion for sailing with a dedication to sustainability, Club Vela Calella is setting a new standard for environmentally conscious sporting events. The club is excited to welcome sailors, supporters, and visitors to this year’s regatta, where competition, camaraderie, and sustainability will come together in perfect harmony.
