Terrific sailing conditions we had here today in Cadiz for rounding the qualifying series of the 2023 ILCA 4 Youth European Championships & Open European Trophy.
Day started early in the morning with the first boats launching around 08:30. Wind was of 16-20 knots and 22-23 in the gusts when the first warning signals were made at 10:00 as per scheduled.
Morning was full of action everywhere at the bay with all 5 fleets sailing at the same time in both courses. Wind was consistent and not varying much in intensity and direction.
After 3 new races for the boys and 2 new races for the girls, the following are the provisional results deciding who will sail in Gold, Silver or Bronze fleets starting tomorrow;
Girl´s results – 2023 ILCA 4 Youth Europeans
Isabella Mendoza USA and Amelie Swen NED are tied in 4 points and leading the Open and European Championships respectively. Alina Shapovalova UKR and Nora Gotovac CRO complete the European podium on places 3rd and 4th overall.
Hermionie Ghicas GRE is leading the Under 16 championship in 5th place overall, followed by Hanna Rogowska POL and Gaya Datiashvili ISR on places 8th and 11th.
Top 10 sailors are separated by 11 points after 4 races and a discard.
Boy´s results – 2023 ILCA 4 Youth Europeans
Nicolo Cassita ITA (Silver medalist in 2022) leads the boy´s championship with perfect score after winning all 5 races.
He´s followed only 1 point behind by another representative of Yacht Club Olbia, Salvatore Falchi ITA.
The third place overall is for Quentin Wallbott FRA, tied in 5 points with Salvatore.
Manuel Vos ITA continues to lead the Under 16 championship in 6th place overall. Sergio Garcia ESP and Kutsal Kurnaz TUR are second and third U16 on places 8th and 11th respectively.
Top 10 sailors are separated for 17 points after 5 races.
The championships will enter into the Final series tomorrow, where sailors will start racing in Gold, Silver and Bronze groups. Gold ones we´ll be providing them with GPS trackers for you to follow their races live here:
3 new races are scheduled for tomorrow, with the first warning signal at 13:00. Coaches meeting at 11:00.
390 young sailors from 39 nations are being part of this competition, organised by Ayuntamiento de Cádiz, Instituto Municipal del Deporte de Cádiz, Real Federación Española de Vela and EurILCA.
The event is supported by Federación Andaluza de Vela, Consejería de Sostenibilidad, Medio Ambiente y Economía Azul and Universidad de Cádiz, and kindly sponsored by Eléctrica de Cádiz, Aguas de Cádiz and Cupra Automoción Terry.
Races will go until Saturday 22nd, when we´ll meet our new 2023 ILCA 4 Youth European champions.
